I was driving a little while ago and I saw a pest control company power spraying pesticides around a house. I stopped and pretended I was interested in the service. I asked him what he was using and he said it was organic, made from chrysanthemums. Of course, that is nonsense as he was using a synthetic pyrethroid which originally had a little chrysanthemum that has had a lot of chemicals added to it. There is nothing organic about it. I asked him why he was spraying when it is 101 degrees outside. He said bugs are out. I said most of the water in the mixture he is spraying is going to evaporate in minutes and what actually hits the ground will break down very quickly in this heat and not kill anything. Actually, that is good and he didn’t believe me which is fine, so he can continue going around spraying homes with pesticides that will have very little, if any, effect on the ecosystem. The fact that they are using synthetic pyrethroids is bad. Doing normal weather they may kill a couple of roaches, but they will also kill a lot of beneficial insects, including praying mantids, ladybugs, parasitic wasps, pollinators and others. These pesticides are capable of causing children to develop leukemia and lymphoma and can cause a pregnant woman to have an autistic child. It has been found that they can even cause men to have erectile dysfunction. I told the person I didn’t need his service and I left. The good news he won’t do too much damage with the pesticides in this heat. The bad news is they are charging people for this nonsense. But that is the pesticide industry. It is all about profit and not about safe and effective pest management.
If you have bugs around your house, all you have to do is inspect it from the outside and look for any cracks in the foundation, openings around plumbing and other areas where bugs can get in the house an seal them. Stuff some steel wool in any voids and that will work. If you can slide a piece of paper under a door, a roach, a centipede and other pests can get in. Install door sweeps on your outside doors. Make sure you close all of your drains at night as roaches often come into homes up the drains from the sewer system or septic tank. There is no reason whatsoever to have pesticides sprayed around the perimeter of your home. It is only a gimmick designed to generate revenue for a pest control company. And if you have a pest control company and they are spraying outside when it is very hot, you should cancel the service.
