Pest Control Professionalism

Pest control professionalism! A fellow from Santa Fe called me last year and said his exterminator was going around the house and spraying his baseboard like he normally does. He said he saw a lot more pesticide coming out of the sprayer and asked the pest guy why he was spraying so much. The pest guy said his nozzle was broken, but not to worry, It will be fixed before his next visit. The fellow asked me what to do. I said he should cancel that service immediately, which he did. This company is a large, local company in Santa Fe.

In Las Cruces, I was at an attorney’s office doing a deposition. I went outside to take a break and there was an exterminator spraying the sidewalks. He just finished spraying all the baseboards in the office. I asked him why he was spraying the sidewalk and he said to kill any bugs that walk on it. I asked him what he was using, and he said he couldn’t tell me. I asked him why not and he said he couldn’t pronounce the name of the pesticide.

In Albuquerque a few years ago, I was driving down a street and I saw a fellow spraying pesticides around a house. It was in the middle of winter and the ground was covered in snow. I had to ask him what he was spraying for. He said the foundation around the house is warm, so he is spraying for any bugs that come to the house to get warm. I shook my head and walked away.

And finally, in Socorro, I recommended a certain pest control company for a termite job to a lady who had termites in a very old home. It even had a small basement. I went by to check on the company doing the job and all they did was did a small trench around the outside. I reminded him that he needed to measure the footer, so he could use the amount of termiticide required on the label. He said he didn’t know how to measure a footer. I went to the owner and told her to call another company and I apologized for recommending this one.

All of the above people are licensed to apply toxic pesticides. This is very bad as they are very poorly regulated. Please be very careful if you use an exterminator as these incidents I mentioned above are not rare. I could write a book on the pesticide misapplications I have witnessed or heard about over the years. In reality, you only need an exterminator if you have yellowjackets or some other stinging insects or termites. Almost all other pests you can control yourself. If you have any pest issues, contact me at and I will recommend non-toxic methods of pest management.

About askthebugman

I have been in the pest management industry for over 40 years. In that time I have used almost every pesticide available to control so-called “pests”. With this experience, I have learned over the years that the pesticides we use are far more dangerous than the pests we are trying to control. As a result, it has become a passion for me to improve the quality of life for humans and the planet, by assisting people to not only become more educated and aware of their environment – but also by learning to manage their home and business with a sustainable and healthier approach to tending to unwanted infestations of bugs. Please enjoy my blog posts, check out my publications, utilize my services, or simply stay in touch if you have a bug question…
